Whether you have a house filled with kids or it's just you, rainy days can get in the way of our day, especially if we previously made plans for something extra fun!
I have compiled a list of solutions to those unexpected rainy days for both adults and children.
Sensory Bins
Having a bin on hand is perfect to grab when playing outside is not an option. But you don't need any fancy materials to achieve a fun sensory bin. Scour the house for crafting puffs, paper tubes, or simply lay a towel down and fill up any sized container with water and add toys to it. There are a million different ways to utilize this as a rainy day option.
Making own Lunch
I have been into the Montessori style of learning for awhile. In fact I didn't realize there was a name for it, until just recently! A basic description would be "introducing your child to skills they will have to master in adulthood, by involving them in the every-day/mundane tasks of life." I watch a toddler 2 days a week and invested in some Montessori style kitchen tools. He can cut his own apples and scoop his own yogurt, with my supervision and he has a blast doing it.
Board Games/ Puzzles
This one is great for anyone! If it is a rainy Saturday and your beach plans are now kaput, get out a board game to play with the family. Maybe you live alone and you had plans for a solitary bike ride, get out a puzzle and throw on a cozy movie.
Baking
Back to the Montessori, have your kids practice the skill of cracking eggs, measuring flour and mixing it all together. Or if you don't have kids bake anyway! Try a new recipe, spend the whole day trying to master a specific baking craft and enjoy the delicious results!
Forts
I don't care if you are 2 or 202, building a fort isn't just for kids of a certain age. I have talked about how romantic they can be to use for an at-home date night. They are also fun to set up and watch a movie together. Kids love them and you will feel the nostalgic rush when you start building and enter your masterpiece.
Journal/ Read
I get it, you're not a writer but keeping a journal isn't just for those who always write the most perfect words, it can be great to write out your feelings or ideas you've had. Reading on a rainy day, what better solution than that!? If you are always wanting to read more often, take advantage of a rainy day to push you into it!
