If you remember, a few months ago we gave our kitchen the facelift we dreamed of and I wrote all about that process HERE on the blog. We wanted to give ourselves some time before doing another labor-filled project. So we decided to make part 2 of our kitchen remodel more of a home furnishing project and the brainstorming of ideas for a breakfast nook began.
Ever since moving in, we both wanted to do something with this big empty space next to the kitchen. For the longest time I kept coming back to the idea of a breakfast nook. The corners of this space are awkwardly shaped and there is a sliding glass door leading out to our small deck.
Chris suggested that eventually, we could knock down our deck and rebuild a newer and bigger one, extending out towards our living room window. Meaning we could put a nook in front of the slider door (which would one day become a window) and remove the living room window and put a set of French doors in its place.
Thanks to modern technology I was able to get a feel for a seating option for the nook. We both liked a cream colored buttoned back loveseat with a white table and white chairs, all to go with our color plans for the kitchen.
The back side of our counter has a detailed panel, I wanted to plaster something over top of it, but Chris wanted to do the hard work of sanding and painting it. We used a mixture of liquid sander and sand paper to sand it down and wiped it clean and began our painting process again (prime, 2 coats of paint and finish).
Once that was done we headed to IKEA! We loved this table (INGATORP) because it has the option to expand, with the leaf storage available inside the table. And these chairs are the exact same as our formal dining room chairs only in white. (EKEDALEN)
We might purchase a buttoned back bench further down the line, and will also be adding a few more chairs but for now we love how this breakfast table looks. I can see us with our future family sitting around it on a Saturday morning eating pancakes. Or helping the future kids with homework while making dinner. Doing these projects really helps bring that feeling of home into our house and I love visualizing it all with Chris. He is such a trooper with hearing me out as I plan, change my mind a million times and think out loud.
This portion of the project was simple to make happen but as furniture is more expensive, this project was done in stages. Remember that there is no rush in furnishing a space all at once. I know how hard that can be, when you have a vision that you just want to see it all play out in one fell swoop. But take your time, remember to budget your project and enjoy the small progress! It will all come together eventually and it leaves you the time to rethink any plans you originally made. Take the time to shop around, virtually try different pieces in your space and give yourself the time to evaluate and process. Most of all, have fun and enjoy the memories made in your home, simple projects and big renovations and everything in between.
Stay tuned for the third and final part of our kitchen facelift. The final piece has more demolition and refurnishing involved so it could be awhile. I might make a vlog series on the process of that section. To follow along with my Vlog follow me on YouTube. You can also search in the video section of this blog!
