One night, as I was scrolling through Instagram, I saw a book shared by a celebrity. The book was titled "Quench," and the cover struck me. 8 Glasses a Day is not the way... Beat fatigue, drop weight and heal your body... Intrigued I ordered a copy for myself.
For most of my adult life I've lived by the knowledge that we should be drinking half our body weight in water. Which is a great place to start, but there were so many factors about hydration that I didn't know!
Being a person who visits her chiropractor regularly, I have learned a lot about the spine and how crucial it is to take care of it and how many ailments, diseases and physical maladies are linked to an unaligned spine. My mental health was partially helped by learning that my spine was tweaked in the exact section of the spine that is supposed to send signals to the part of the brain that releases serotonin. It wasn't working properly. When learning more about my spine I learned and was urged by my chiropractor to do daily at-home stretches or exercises for my spine to keep up with his work on the table. Whenever I feel discomfort in my hips or neck, I do a quick stretch and it does wonders for my mood, posture and discomfort.
So when I read through this book and learned that stretching can also help our bodies maintain hydration, it all made sense.
Something else that clicked with me is the subject of our modern day environments. Cell phones, computers, air conditioning and car rides are all dehydrating us!
They gave tips like keeping phones a certain distance away from us throughout the day, adding a bit of steam to our work desks (whether breathing in the vapor from a cup of tea or investing in an oil diffuser). Rolling down the window every so often during long car rides and doing simple stretches throughout the day to ensure we are staying hydrated at a deeper, molecular level.
Speaking of the tiny particles that make up our entire universe… water and hydration are best achieved when they are maneuvered at a cellular level. This can look like diet and exercise but also brushing. Brushing the surfaces of our skin can help move water molecules and keeps our skin hydrated, as well as assisting them to move to other parts of our body.
In this book, they give many different world studies and examples to back up their research. They also give examples of some of their patients who have come to them with various different issues, and each patient saw significant difference through their recommendations. The book also includes smoothie recipes and stretching routines and more!
If you are like me, you are always interested in how to further improve your health and maybe you are also curious about the science behind water and how we can be getting optimal hydration in an increasingly dehydrating world. I highly recommend getting yourself a copy, you can find it HERE
