Whenever I am ready to move on to our next home project there are a few steps to the process. Maybe you are really wanting to dive into a home renovation, room facelift or refurnishing. Maybe you are at a loss for where to even begin! Let’s look at the “How To’s” of starting a Home Project.
1. Assessing the Space
With every room we have tackled, I always start by spending time in the room to really get a feel for it. The size, the shape, the current color scheme. I find that this step helps me find inspiration and sparks some imagination. Assessing your space is a simple yet important first step, it will help you immensely with the next step!
2. Setting Goals
Setting your goals for your space allows the project to truly begin. Now that we feel inspired by our room, we can make simple goals to improve it. Picking out your own colors, furniture or even restructuring the room you're working on.
3. Measurements
To find out if our goals are possible, we need to do some measuring. If you have plans to build a bay window you’ll need to make sure your space will fit or that you can fit it to your space! Measure the walls and windows and doorways, make your own sketch of a blueprint and then you'll know what to look for when creating or purchasing your own furniture.
4. Create Budget
Creating a budget is very crucial. Doing this will determine when you can start your project and helps give you an estimate as to how long it might take you to complete. Depending on how big your project is, it will vary on how long your project will take and how much it will cost. Work it into your regular budget and don’t worry if you need split your project into chunks to better fit your specific budget! I also account for any extra money for those unpredictable bumps in the project's path.
5. Schedule
Creating a work schedule for your project helps keep things organized and helps me feel less stressed during the day. If you work a full-time job or are busy with kids or you just run a crazy busy life, creating a schedule makes the work run smoothly. It also helps with estimating the timeframe of your project.
6. Research
Researching products and tools and listening to other’s and their experiences with similar projects is the best treasure trove of knowledge. I will be the first to admit that I can have a bit of pride when it comes to my own projects. If I had it my way, I would just know how to knock down a wall and create something magnificent instantly, but asking friends for help or doing the work to research what works best is the only way I have found things run smoothly for me when working on my own projects.
7. Purchasing Supplies
Now that we know which products and tools will work best with our budget and project it’s time to purchase them! It is completely up to you how you want to purchase them, I typically like making a list and then buying them all in one trip. It never fails, I always end up back at the store anyway for an overlooked or wrong sized item.
8. Divide the Work
Dividing the work makes reaching your goals feel more achievable. Break your room or space into sections. Or complete one step before moving onto the next one.
9.Take Your Time
Take your time. No, really! I know it can feel exciting to finally be improving your space but that feeling, at least for me, can make things feel rushed. Rushing through a project is risky business, as it can cause flaws and inevitably adds unwanted time to the schedule. So take breaks in between, pace yourself and always accept help that is offered and ask for it when you need it!
10. Enjoy Your Work
Once the project is complete you can sit back and take it all in. Look at all the hard work you accomplished! It is a great feeling and you deserve to feel the pride of a job well done. Throw a party to show it off, document it on social media or use it as a helpful Blog Post for your followers to get inspired!
