Do you spend more time reorganizing your closets and drawers, than actually wearing those cute outfits? Wish you had a full proof system that keeps those clothes in order rather than living out of your hamper? I may have the solution you are looking for, or rather solutions!
I find that when my closet and dresser have a system, I am less likely to live out the scenario above. I've always liked the motto "work smarter not harder." And organizing clothing is no exception to this. Read below about my tips to maintaining an orderly closet space.
Sifting Out
We all are hanging onto clothes that either haven't fit us in the last few years or that we just haven't worn in forever! I learned a trick years ago on how to keep track of those items. Turn your hangers the opposite direction. If at the end of the entire year some hangers aren't turned around, I donate them.
You can also do one big sifting project. Pulling everything out and making the tough decisions. If you're like me and have a hard time of letting go of certain pieces, try the hanger trick!
Seasonal
Another tip that is helpful in maintaining closet clutter, is categorizing your clothing. Get 2 clear tubs and label them "Winter" + "Summer." In the winter tub you can put the bulk of your pants, sweaters, long underwear, sweatpants, long sleeved tops and chunky woolen socks. The summer bin can contain swim suits, shorts, thin shawls and wraps, tank tops and even flip flops. I always have short sleeved shirts in my closet and at least one pair of pants at all times
Separating your clothes, seasonally can help create more space and can get you excited for the changing seasons when they come!
Intimates
Something that can help keep those socks, underwear, bras and pantyhose tidy are inserts. Whether you make them yourself or purchase them, creating barriers helps these smaller items stay put. It also makes putting them back easier to manage since you can see exactly where you took them out from.
This is also a great idea for kids' dresser drawers, you can label each section and it helps your kids get into the habit of organization!
Rainbow Order
I love organizing things in rainbow order, this is another hack that keeps your kids' rooms clean and introduces organization skills at an early age.
My shoes are organized this way, as well as my shirts and dresses. White, Pink, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, Cream, Gray and Black. It really helps when putting laundry back, my wonderful (untidy) husband finds this useful when putting his clothes away. It also helps me to find the outfit I want to wear, instead of sifting through my closet for 10 minutes saying "where on earth is that cream colored tank top!?"
What did you think? Do you already use some of these tricks? When was the last time you cleaned out your closet??
A bonus trick is to clean out closet spaces and deep clean your home every Spring and Autumn, that way it's done before the dreaded heat and busyness of Summer and before the frigid air and Holiday Season with Winter!

The Apple definitely doesn’t fall far from the tree. You are so much like your parents . The organization, you get from both of us, the work smarter not harder, is your Dad. I have never done the hanger thing, but I’ve done the totes, especially when you and your sisters were little. Now, I just go through my clothes every 6 months or so and pitch stuff I haven’t worn in awhile.
