February Kid Crafts

Making creations with kids can be stressful and messy. But it also can break up your day nicely, is a huge learning experience for them, and there are some really cute ideas.

I have been working with kids for the last 18 years, and have gone through many a craft! Today, I wanted to share some cute and simple craft ideas for February that can be done with kids of all ages.

Heart Bookmark: Grab any colored construction paper and cut off about an inch and a half to two inches off the side, creating a square shape. Because of your cut, the paper should already be folded diagonally to look like a triangle. Take the bottom corners of your triangle and fold up towards the top (now you should have a diamond like shape).

Unfold back to the triangle shape and fold back the middle, the tip should be touching the base of the triangle. Take the bottom flaps and tuck them into your newly created pocket. Draw rounded edges on the top and cut along the lines to complete your heart shape. Stuff the page of your book into the heart.

This can be done with older kids, or yourself with thinner paper, like origami paper.

Garland: Pick the color you want your hearts to be, using any kind of paper. Using a plate or bowl, place over the paper and trace circle. Cut out the circle and fold flipping the paper back and forth until it looks like an accordion. Bend the folded accordioned paper in half. Tape in the middle to make it stay. With an adults help, take thread and a sewing needle to weave the hearts on the same string. You could also use a hole punch and thicker string, but I really like the "invisible" look.

Homemade Valentines: My favorite method is using shaving cream and food coloring in a tray. Squeeze shaving cream onto a tray and drop a few drops of food coloring on top. Swirl the colors in the shaving cream making a marbled looking design. Then place a sheet of paper on the colored shaving cream. Pull it up and using a paper towel wipe off the excess. The design transfers to the paper. Let it dry completely then fold in half and have your kids write kind notes to family and friends!

Homemade Heart Stamp: Grab a recycled toilet paper or paper towel roll and bend one side inward. Fold the other side so it comes to a point, this creates a heart shaped stamp. Now the kids can dip the shaped roll into some paint and stamp onto paper for a super simple craft project.

Fizzing Heart Art: Using water color paper, cut out heart shapes. Sprinkle baking soda on the hearts. In small cups or bowls mix vinegar and food coloring. Taking small pipette, drip vinegar-coloring mixture over the baking soda hearts. Watching them fizz is such a fun experience for both kids and adults! Once they are done fizzing, tip them so the excess falls off, let them dry and hang up around the house for a fun and creative piece of décor! I didn’t have watercolor paper, so I tried with regular construction paper and it didn’t have the same affect, so definitely invest in watercolor paper if you can. Otherwise it’s still a fun colorful activity that shakes up the boring crayon or marker routine ☺️
