Cluttered Closets

Closets are the sections of a home that go most untended to and are most of our go-to places to "hide" things, or to store those miscellaneous items (for a time) until we can get to them and either donate them or find them appropriate homes.

Today I am going to talk about the 3 closets we use most often and how I took them from cluttered to chic!

First lets talk about the "Linen Closet." We are a family of two so, right now, it is fairly easy to manage. However when we first moved in it looked something like this:

Disorganized and untidy. We lived like this for over a year! Loki's towels were mixed in with ours as well as the guest towels. Linens and pillows were stacked on top of one another. Cleaning supplies had a very small space to live in.

This particular closet has a hanging rod located, almost, at the very top of the closet. Then there are two shelves with some space on the floor. We also stored a box fan and our suitcases in this closet causing more mayhem than needed.

So I relocated the suitcases to our bedroom closet and took everything out. I ordered these fabric organizers. They have hooks that hang onto the high placed rod. They also have smaller rods at the base. I folded each set of towel and bedding sets and placed them into their new home.

This freed up space for our spare bedding (decorative pillows and comforter) as well as the guest bedding, air mattress and box fan. I can now fit a basket of cleaning supplies, stored nicely in this closet as well!

I also had a dream for closet lighting and Chris made my dreams come true with these lights from IKEA

The next project was the coat closet. Covid had put a hold on the amount of guests we welcomed into our home and that meant the coat closet became our new catch all location.

When our entertaining became a bit more frequent, I knew I needed to tend to this eye sore! No guest of mine would see the horror film that lay behind the closet door.

I began by gutting the space, taking every single thing out of the space and creating piles. A Loki pile, summer item pile, winter item pile and other piles that didn't fit the theme of a coat closet.

The picnic items, cooler, Loki's travel bag, basket of winter accessories, spare dog waste bags and Loki's bigger toys all went back inside the closet.

We had so many unnecessary things stored in there (a tower of board games to be precise) and I spent ZERO dollars on organizing it!

The last of the main closets to tackle, was our gorgeous master closet! Because of it's size, neither Chris or I minded storing, again, unrelated items to the space.

I went through and took out all of the board games, dug out all of the baskets and began sorting through my clothing. I purged everything that didn't fit and/or things I hadn't worn in a long time.

Then I went through and sifted out the cream colored hangers, we have mostly black and I wanted it to look neat by making the hangers all uniform. I organized the clothing by rainbow order (white, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, gray, black).

Then I folded mine and Chris' pajamas, leggings, shorts and pants and placed them neatly on the shelves. The top shelf is home to my shoes organized in rainbow order as well. I also store all of my jewelry in the closet so I have two cases for smaller pieces and I used 3M hooks on the back of the closet to store my bigger/longer necklaces.

Another change we made was to remove our laundry hamper from our bedroom. Having the bed, nightstands, dresser and bookshelf in their, made keeping a hamper on the floor feel cluttered.

I got rid of it and replaced it with these hanging hampers. They come in a pack of two and are perfect to store on the clothing rods in our master closet.

Laundry day is made easier with these as well, since each person can carry their own hamper to the laundry room. We will definitely be getting a few more of these, once we have kiddos!

I also utilized my old clothing rack, that I used to display clothes and jewelry, as a bag rack. All of the totes and purses that I am not currently using are stored there.

There you have it! Another project done, another area(s) organized and life made easier by eliminating clutter + putting in place organizing tips to keep the spaces tidy!

Spring cleaning has begun! I encourage you to make your lives simpler by purging the unneeded items and utilizing the space you have to make your closets chic and not cluttered.
