I am a fan of self-care! And I scoured the web to find scientific benefits to some of my favorite forms of self-care:
Move Your Body
Exercising is not only going to manage weight and strengthen our bones and muscles but also to improve our brain health.
Rest Your Body
Resting our bodies via nap taking, watching television or any other low-energy activities can improve your immune health, boosts creativity, improves mood and reduced stress and anxiety.
Feed Your Body
We are what we eat, so be sure to get your fill of healthy fats, protein, fruits and veggies and carbohydrates. Feeding our bodies gives us clarity of mind, and makes us feel more alert.
Hydrate Your Body
Good old water helps regulate body temperature, lubricates joints, and can prevent infections. If drinking bland plain water all day isn't doable for you, try infusing your water with citrus, berries or cucumbers
Pamper Your Body
Getting a massage or taking a relaxing bath at home can help reduce cortisol levels and promotes relaxation.
Tune in to Your Body-meditate
Meditation is great for staying centered and keeping your inner peace. It also helps to manage any stress going on. I like to do anything from a full meditation to an 8 minute deep breathing exercise.
Find the Fun
When we go out and do something fun for ourselves we can reduce stress, strengthen our social connections, and improve our memories
Prayer
Having an active prayer life gives us a positive sense of meaning, hope and empathy.
Sunshine
The glorious sun, which can disappear for a time out East, increases serotonin which boosts mood, and helps us feel calm and focused. If you are a Michigander, try finding a happy Light and taking Vitamin D supplements during the long winter.
Gratitude
A grateful heart is a happy heart. Practicing gratitude improves mood, immunity and sleep. It can also decrease feelings of depression and anxiety.
